Motion of the packet of small-scale Alfven waves in the mean-latitude plasmasphere

Description

The motion in the Earth plasmasphere of the packet of Alfven waves generated by a localized source of artificial or natural origin in the main-latitute ionosphere is investigated. The equation describing the packet shift across force lines of geomagnetic field is obtained. According to the calculations the packet motion trajectory in the mean-latitude magnetosphere depends on thermal plasma distribution in the magnetosphere and can considerably shift over L-shells. The possibility of MHD-waveguide existence at certain shells near L1.3 is a very important circumstance. The so-called ''bubbles''-plasma depleted force tubes, floating to the upper ionosphere in the latitudes of equatorial ionospheric anomaly, can play the role of such waveguides
