Description

Nuclear Science and Technology research at ANSTO covers a broad range of disciplines and functions. ANSTO conducts mission-based research in fields of inquiry that are connected to problems in the nuclear fuel cycle, targeted research and development that informs, assists and supports in the development of commercially oriented operations in ANSTO's Nuclear Business, partnered research across a broad range of established and new research areas and significant user-based research programs using unique and world-class facilities. ANSTO is not only an organisation that conducts research; it is also one that, by virtue of its capital infrastructure, facilitates the research of other organisations. Over the past ten years significant investments and acquisitions have been made and realised at ANSTO including, the OPAL research reactor, the Australian Synchrotron, the Centre for Accelerator Science, the research cyclotron at Camperdown, the refurbishment of the Materials Fabrication Bay, and a new building for electron microscopy. This capital investment is a significant factor that influences the strategy and direction for nuclear science and technology research at ANSTO. The knowledge and expertise generated from ANSTO's research is also used to provide advice to Government in a range of areas and disciplines including nuclear security and developments in new nuclear power technologies. The presentation will give specific examples of research being conducted at ANSTO in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle, The Environment, Human Health and large user-based programs at the Australian Synchrotron and the OPAL research reactor. ANSTO's platforms that support these research areas will also be described.
