Description
During the life of a nuclear power station intermediate and low-level wastes are produced during normal operations. The main radioactive isotopes involved, include 60Co, 90Sr and 137Cs with half-lives ranging from 6-30 years, which decay to harmless material in about 300 years. A plant like Koeberg can produce as much as 2000 drums of waste which can safely be manhandled and stored above ground. The establishment in 1978 of a specialist group on 'Radioactive Waste Management Alternatives for Commercial Nuclear Power in South Africa' resulted in a recommendation that a program be mounted to locate a suitable site or sites for the storage/disposal of radioactive wastes in South Africa. The site-selection program for which the Nuclear Development Corporation has accepted responsibility, was subsequently formulated, comprising certain stages
