Homogenization of thorium and uranium in ThO2-UO2 solid solution during sintering

  • 1. Kyushu Univ., Fukuoka (Japan). Faculty of Engineering

Description

ThO2(80%)-UO2(20%) solid solutions was fabricated by mechanical blending of powders, pressing and subsequent sintering in the temperature region 1350-1950deg C. The degree of homogeneity was evaluated by X-ray diffraction and then interdiffusion coefficient was calculated from it, based on the concentric sphere diffusion model. Temperature dependence of interdiffusion coefficient, D was given by the following equation. D = 1.95 x 10-9 exp (- 49,000/RT)cm2/sec. Diffusion mechanism was discussed by comparing the value of activation energy with data in other diffusion studies. (author)
