Radiation resistance of the quartz core fiber, (5)

  • 1. Mitsubishi Cable Industries Ltd., Tokyo (Japan)

Description

The quartz optical fiber is widely used in long-distance, large-capacity transmission. In the optical communication system used under radiation environment, an optical fiber highly radiation resistant is required. In the wholly-synthetic pure quartz core fiber prepared by minimizing the impurities in the clad for its high purity, its radiation resistance at low temperature is high. Concerning the radiation characteristic at short wavelengths as the cause for loss increase at long wavelengths, in the γ-ray irradiation experiment with OH and Cl contents in the core as the parameters, the absorption at short wavelengths due to Cl becomes high at low temperature.
