General equilibrium and stability properties of high-β tokamaks
Description
An analytic approach to the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and stability of large-aspect-ratio tokamak configurations in which the fluid and magnetic pressures are comparable, is developed. It is shown that these configurations are unstable against a pressure gradient driven internal mode whose threshold sets an upper limit to the ''second'' domain of stability
