Test production of large 60Co sources with JMTR

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Tokai, Ibaraki. Tokai Research Establishment

Description

To establish the production technique of 60Co radiation sources with high specific activity, the target pellets of cobalt (diameter 1.0mm x length 1.0mm, weighting 6.9mg, with Ni plating) were irradiated for a maximum of 5,573 hr at average thermal neutron flux 1.2 x 1014n/cm2.sec. The total activity of 60Co sources was 1.9 kCi, with a maximum specific activity of 68.1 Ci/g. The 60Co sources were enclosed in stainless steel capsules, each of length of 96mm and diameter 10mm, for the sealed sources. Sealed sources were examined in surface contamination and leakage by wipe and immersion tests. Test production was started in 1967, and finished in 1976; the products were all delivered to Irradiation Service Section, Takasaki Radiation Chemistry Research Establishment, JAERI. (auth.)
