Assay of leached hulls - validation of the gamma spectrometric method

  • 1. Fuel Chemistry Div., Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam (India)

Description

Monitoring of leached hulls is carried out to determine the amount of fuel in waste to minimise loss of fuel material. A very popular albeit indirect method is the gamma spectrometric determination of a fission product nuclide like 144Ce that acts as a tracer for plutonium. The present paper details the results of experiments conducted to determine the validity of the assumption that the ratio of fission products to plutonium is the same in the dissolver solution as in the hull.
