Fire and furnace testing of transportation packages for radioactive materials: regulations and principles
Description
This document provides background and information for performing a physical thermal test, using either a fire or a furnace, on transportation packages for radioactive material. Thermal accident test conditions for all Type A and Type B packages for the transport of radioactive material specified in Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 71 are summarized. In addition, the thermal mechanisms that contribute to the total heat load during an accident are discussed. Information in this report can be appropriately applied to ensure that acceptable test conditions and test results have been achieved for a particular package design.
