Bituminization of liquid radioactive wastes

  • 1. Vyskumny Ustav Jadrovych Elektrarni, Trnava (Czechoslovakia)

Description

The general chemical properties of bitumens are described. Three basic techniques of solidifying liquid radioactive wastes in bitumen were developed, viz., mixing at temperatures of 140 to 200 degC while water is evaporated; mixing at ambient temperature with subsequent heating; and mixing with a surface-active emulgation agent and water removal. Components are discussed affecting the product quality, and the properties of the final product are characterized. (M.D.). 4 tabs., 8 refs
