Radiation transmuting method of radioactive iodine and neutron irradiation device therefor
Description
A liquid or a solid target containing iodine-129 of a long half life nuclide is formed. The iodine-129 is contained in wastes generated from nuclear power facilities such as nuclear power plants or nuclear fuel reprocessing plants. Neutrons are irradiated to the target by a facility which generates neutrons such as epithermal neutrons, resonance neutrons or fast neutrons. The liquid target comprises a liquid prepared by dissolving iodine-129 in an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide. The solid target is prepared by sealing iodine including iodine-129 in the form of compounds of lead iodide and cerium iodide in a sealing tube capable of withstanding the inner pressure of a xenon gas generated during neutron irradiation. This can transmute iodine-129 as a long half life nuclide to iodine-130 of a short half life nuclide. (I.N.)
