Posiva - a new company for the final disposal of spent fuel in Finland

Creators

  • 1. Posiva Oy, Helsinki (Finland)

Description

Arrangements for the safe management of radioactive wastes produced by the Finnish nuclear industry have been made since construction of the nuclear power plants began in the 1970's. According to Finnish legislation, the responsibility for nuclear waste management lies with the waste producers. Posiva arranges necessary research, and will later oversee construction and operation of the disposal facility for spent fuel. In addition to its principal mission, the final disposal of spent fuel, Posiva is also able to carry out other expert tasks within the nuclear waste management field, working both for its own shareholders and also for other organisations. Posiva's expertise is therefore also available for utilisation in the management of low and intermediate-level wastes which result from the operation and dismantling of Finnish domestic power plants. Furthermore, Finnish experience will be able to serve the needs of nuclear waste management programs in other countries
