Systematics of (α,12C) in light nuclei and implications for multi-α-cluster transfer reactions

Description
The 16O, /sup 24,26/Mg, 28Si, 32S, 40Ca(α,12C) reactions have been studied at E/sub α/=90.3 MeV. The observed cross sections fall off rapidly with increasing target mass (A/sub t//sup -5tsplus-or-minusts1/), consistent with predictions for direct 8Be or successive α transfer employing first-order SU3 cluster overlap amplitudes, although other, more complicated mechanisms cannot be excluded. The results are extrapolated and estimates of multi-α-cluster transfer cross sections in heavy nuclei, such as those proposed to synthesize superheavy elements, are obtained
