Magnetic resonance imaging assessment of the substrate for hyposmia in patients with Parkinson's disease

Highlights: • Gray matter structures of the normosmic and hyposmic PD were compared using MRI. • Aging effect was dominant in most of the subcortical gray matter changes. • Right thalamus of the hyposmic PD showed a decreased magnetic susceptibility. • Left thalamus of the hyposmic PD showed an increased magnetic susceptibility. • Disease-related structural changes in both thalami are associated with hyposmia in PD. -- Abstract: To assess whether multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could detect neuroanatomical substrates that are distinctive to hyposmic Parkinson's disease (PD).
