Heat pipe material compatibility concerns for a remote reactor
Description
A current remote reactor power supply design is based on the use of heat pipes to transfer heat from a graphite reactor core to the power conversion system at an operating temperature in the 770-870 K range. This temperature dictates that the heat pipe working fluid be potassium. Prior tests have shown both austenitic stainless steels and zirconium alloys are compatible with potassium in this temperature range. Several additional material compatibility lifetime issues and test results are discussed. Included are potassium-graphite core reactions, zirconium-graphite core reactions, and the effect of impurities on heat pipe lifetime
