Towards upper power levels: thermonuclear fusion

Description

This paper is a brief introduction to the use of power lasers to achieve controlled thermonuclear fusion. After shortly describing thermonuclear fusion and the conditions of temperature, density and duration required it is showed how the laser enables such conditions to be created. The neodymium-doped glass laser NOVA that is being installed at the Livermore laboratory in the USA is described; at the time of its completion in 1984, this laser will be the most powerful in the world. In comparison, the OCTAL laser in operation at the Limeil establishment ''Centre d'Etudes'' of ''Commissariat Francais a l'Energie Atomique'' (the French atomic energy authority) is more modest; it is presented here

Abstract (French)

Cet article est une breve introduction a l'utilisation des lasers de puissance pour realiser la fusion thermonucleaire controlee. Apres une description succincte de la fusion thermonucleaire et des conditions de temperature, densite, duree, qui sont necessaires pour la realiser, on montre comment le laser permet d'atteindre de telles conditions. On decrit le laser a verre dope au neodyme NOVA, en cours d'intallation au laboratoire de Livermore aux USA; lors de son achevement en 1984, ce laser sera le plus puissant au monde. Par comparaison, le laser OCTAL en service au Centre d'Etudes de Limeil du Commissariat francais a l'Energie Atomique est plus modeste; il sera brievement presente
