Effect of XeF2 on bicarbonate and carbonate solutions of Am(III) and Tb(III)
Description
Adding a 10-fold excess of XeF2 to Am(III) in 1.5-2.5 M KHCO3 or 1.5 M KHCO3 + K2CO3 (pH < 11) quantitatively forms Am(IV) within the time of mixing. The stoichiometry coefficient n = Δ[Am(IV)]/Δ[XeF2] under optimal conditions (1.5 M KHCO3) is less than 0.23. In 3.4-5.9 M K2CO3, Am(III) was not oxidized. The mechanism of Am(III) oxidation is discussed. Experiments with Tb(III) showed that it is not oxidized under all studied conditions
