Use of lactose or polyvinylpyrrolidone obtaining cuprous oxide synthesized on cotton fabric

Description

Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) has gather interest because of their potential applications as photocatalyst, gas sensor and antimicrobial agent. Hence, it was sought to synthesize Cu2O supported on mercerized cotton fabric (TC-M) using lactose (LAC) or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as protective agent and ascorbic acid (AA) or hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HL) as reducing agent. Smaller crystallite sizes of Cu2O were obtained in presence of LAC, when compared to samples synthesized with PVP. Cotton fabric-Cu2O nanocomposites showed absorption bands in the region of 470 nm to 564 nm, which were not observed to TC-M. SEM images showed better coverage of fibers with Cu2O, as well smaller particle sizes for samples synthesized with AA, when compared with the samples obtained with HL. (author)
