Symmetries of theories in higher dimensions
Description
This lecture provides the necessary group-theoretical background for tackling dimensional compactification. First standard group theory techniques are described, using Dynkin's language, and the many group-theoretic miracles of ten dimensions are discussed. Next, coset-space physics and the harmonic expansion on these spaces are presented. Finally the group theory behind string theories is described. 51 refs.; 18 tabs
