Description

In extractive purification of the low-enriched uranium fuel element (UO2-particle fuel element with SiC coating) no problems arise in the PUREX-process which have not already been solved when reprocessing LWR-type reactor and breeder fuel elements. Concerning the HTR-type reactor fuel elements containing thorium, there are two process cycles behind the head end; the pure U-235 is reprocessed in the same manner as the low-enriched uranium fuel, and the thorium, which is the bigger fraction, is reprocessed together with U-233 in the same manner as the mixed oxides. Only the CO2-off gas system, which contains krypton and carbon 14, leads to difficulties in nuclear waste disposal. (DG)

Abstract (German)

Bei der extraktiven Reinigung des LEU-Brennstoffs (UO2-Partikel-BE mit SiC-Schichtung) treten keine Probleme beim PUREX-Prozess auf, die nicht schon bei der Wiederaufarbeitung von LWR- und Brueterbrennstoffen geloest worden sind. Bei Th-haltigen HTR-Brennstoffen ergeben sich nach dem Verbrennungs-Head-End zwei Prozessstroeme, wovon der reine U-235-Strom wie der LEU-Brennstoff und der groessere Th-Strom mit dem U-233 wie die Mischoxide wiederaufarbeitet werden. Schwierigkeiten bei der Entsorgung bereiten nur der Kr und C-14 enthaltende CO2-Abgasstrom. (DG)
