Description
This paper discusses the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA). The NWPA established a national policy for safely storing, transporting, and disposing of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste. Under the Act, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has the primary responsibility to: perform research and development, and demonstrate the disposal of spent fuel and high-level waste; design, schedule, site, construct, and operate deep-mined geologic waste repositories. The NWPA authorizes a number of activities which, taken together, can meet the objectives of providing safe and permanent disposal of spent fuel and high-level waste
