Decommissioning of Japan Power Demonstration Reactor (JPDR). Outline and background of JPDR decommissioning program

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Tokai, Ibaraki (Japan). Tokai Research Establishment

Description

The actual dismantling of the JPDR has been progressing successfully since 1986, and has been producing various useful data and experience for decommissioning of nuclear power reactors. As of March 1994, the reactor internals, the reactor pressure vessel and the biological shield have been dismantled. In the next stage, all buildings will be decontaminated and demolished, and the site will be landscaped by the end of fiscal 1996. In the final stage of the decommissioning program, it is very important to evaluate the developed technology based on data obtained from actual use in the program for taking advantage of the technology in the future decommissioning of nuclear power reactors. This report describes the background and the outline of JPDR decommissioning program. (author)
