Interim Report on the Behaviour of Reactor Group UKAEA Compatibility Specimens Exposed in Dragon Heat Exchangers
Description
A number of materials are being exposed to reactor coolant at about 670-690°C in Dragon heat exchangers. The programme covers coupons, crevices and pressurised tubes. Gravimetric and metallographic results are reported for specimens withdrawn after 2,300 hours and gravimetric results only for specimens exposed for 4,650 hours. High temperature materials generally showed low and decreasing rates of interaction with the coolant, with some evidence for gas-phase depletion effects within crevices; carbide precipitation (believed to be an ageing rather than an atmosphere effect) was also observed. Mild steel decarburised throughout, but 1 Cr J 1/2 Mo apparently only within a zone (ca. 0.5 x 10-3 in.) subject to internal oxidation.
