Spontaneous strain and microstructures of YBa2(Cu1-xCox)3O7-δ

  • 1. IRC in Superconductivity, Cambridge Univ. (United Kingdom)

Description

Substitution of Co or Fe on the Cu(1) site in YBa2Cu3O7-δ is known to decrease the ferroelastic spontaneous strain (orthorhombic) ε=2(b-a)/(a+b) and thus induce a macroscopic ferroelastic-paraelastic phase change from orthorhombic to tetragonal symmetry. Other substituents such as Zn and Ni preferentially occupy the Cu(2) sites, and do not show a pronounced effect on the orthorhombicity. Twinning on {110} occurs as a consequence of the ferroelastic spontaneous strain ε in the orthorhombic phase, and ε also controls the equilibrium spacing between the {110} twin planes. Hence chemical doping provides an excellent tool to control the number of twin planes per unit volume and to study potential flux-pinning properties of the twin microstructure. (orig.)
