Physics at the LHC
Description
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will provide proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV with a design luminosity of 1034 cm-2s-1. The design of an experiment for the LHC is guided by the physics objectives to search for particles predicted by the Standard Model, like the Higgs boson, and particles predicted by current theories that go beyond the Standard Model. The exploitation of the rich physics potential will be illustrated using the expected performance of the two proposed general-purpose pp detectors ATLAS and CMS. In addition to the discovery potential offered by multi-TeV pp collision a status of the overall LHC experimental programme will be given. (author) 13 figs., 3 tabs., 22 refs
