Inclusive production of muon pairs and vector mesons in π-N collisions at momenta 27 and 40 GeV/c

Description

The results of measurements of inclusive production of muon pairs and J/psi resonances in π-N collisions were presented. Experiments were carried out with π- meson beams at 27 and 40 GeV/c interacting with copper nuclei. J/psi particles were produced near the threshold region. Cross sections and differential distributions in the Xsub(F), Psub(t) kinematic variables were obtained for J/psi and muon pair production. A large value for the J/psi production cross sections at 27 GeV/c pointed to relative smallness of J/psi pair production mechanism. The cross sections of muon pair production more weakly depended on the Xsub(F) value as compared with the cross sections for J/psi particle production. Muon pair production was considered in the frameworks of the Drell-Yan model. Pion structure function was defined assuming that the Drell-Yan mechanism was essential in these experiments
