Description

In this research, radiofrequency (RF) properties of accelerating cavities loaded with radial-cut magnetic-alloy cores are analyzed to investigate how a radial gap affects the accelerator performance of the cavity. The analysis verifies that the Q-value of the cut-core cavity is much higher than that of the non-cut-core cavity whereas the shunt resistance is somewhat lower. It also shows that the radial gap greatly mitigates the heavy radial dependence of the local RF power loss that varies as 1/r2 for the non-cut-core cavity. As a result of reduced RF heating near the inner radius, the cut-core cavity can accept a higher RF power and consequently can generate a higher RF accelerating voltage than the non-cut-core cavity. Some numerical examples are provided to show how the RF properties of the cut-core cavity are different from those of the non-cut-core cavity. (author)
