Description

This work compares the functionalization of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) block Copolymer with Diethyl Maleate (DEM) as functional monomer by gamma radiation and by traditional functionalization via free radicals. For the functionalization via gamma radiation, SBS was mixed with DEM (10, 20 and 30 %) in an internal mixer at 150 degree and 30 r.p.m. The samples were irradiated with γ rays at integral doses of 15, 25 and 70 kGy using a dose rate of 4.8 kGy/h in air, at room temperature with a 60Co source. Functionalization of SBS with DEM (6, 8 and 10%) using Benzoile Peroxide (BOP) like initiator (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 %), was carried out using an internal mixer. The modified SBS (SBS-g-DEM) was dissolved in toluene and precipitated with methanol. Molded films of these products were analyzed by means of a FTIR spectrophotometer. Gel content (%) of SBS-g-DEM was determined by Soxhlet extraction
