Search for heavy mass particles in cosmic ray hadron interactions

Description
Two experiments were carried out at mountain altitude, using a large volume multiplate cloud chamber to search for the production of heavy mass (>= 2 GeV/c2) charged particles in interactions of cosmic ray hadrons in the energy range 50-1,000 GeV. The experiments set an upper limit of approximately 100 microbarns for the production cross-section of charged particles of mass >= 2 GeV/c2 and lifetime > a few times 10-10 seconds, in the momentum range 1,000-2,000 MeV/c. In Gebirgshoehe wurden zwei Versuche durchgefuehrt. Zum Nachweis der Erzeugung von geladenen Teilchen mit schwerer Masse ( >= 2 GeV/c2) bei Wechselwirkungen von aus kosmischer Strahlung stammenden Hadronen im Energiebereich 50-1.000 GeV wurde eine vielschichtige Nebelklammer mit grossem Volumen verwendet. Die Versuche legten eine obere Grenze von ca. 100 Mikrobarn fuer den Erzeugungsquerschnitt geladener Teilchen der Masse >= 2 GeV/c2 und der Lebensdauer > einige 10-10 Sekunden im Impulsbereich 1.000-2.000 MeV/c fest.
