Microtextural characterization of the hot rolled austenitic stainless steel UNS 30409 using electron backscatter diffraction measurements (EBSD)

Description

The annealing twins can be observed in metal with face-centered cubic crystal structure (FCC) with medium or low stacking fault energy (SFE). The annealing twin boundary, Σ3 type, it is quite relevant and can affect various properties of metals such as corrosion and fatigue resistance. In this work, samples were metallographically prepared using grinding e polishing. The sample characterization using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out. The mesotexture of the UNS 30409 steel was characterized using electron backscatter diffraction measurements (EBSD) after hot-rolling deformation. The results were both collected and analyzed using the EDAX-TSL software. The distribution of the CSL boundaries and the fraction of annealing twin boundaries were investigated. The results have showed that dynamic recrystallization took place. High fraction of high angle boundaries, particularly, high fraction of annealing twin, Σ3 type, was observed in the microstructure.
