Description

Full-text:Export of fresh fruits from one country to another is restricted by stringent phytosanitary or quarantine requirements. Importing country such as United States (US) accept fruits in condition they have gone through irradiation treatment for the purpose of pest disinfestation. Before any type of fruits from a country could be accepted they shall undergo a performance qualification assessment for approval. The objective of the assessment is to guide both side from inspector and also the facility from any factor that could affect the adsorption of radiation during treatment which could halt achievement of the desired outcome. In this study, Jackfruits (Artocarpusheterophyllus L. var J33) also known as Tekam Yellow were assessed for their process configuration during treatment at gamma irradiation facility. Each fruit with average gross weight of 10.5 + 1.1 kg was packed into custom made carton boxes with size of 30.7 cm x 46.0 cm x 38.6 cm (W x L X H). Loading pattern in tote was determined at 12 carton per tote in which the arrangement was 2 x 2 x 3 (W x L x H) in triplicates to give load bulk density of 0.14g/cc. Optichromic dosimeters located at pre-determined locations were used as measurement device since its ability to measure low dose within permitted range. Performance qualification assessment done has determined the average minimum and maximum absorbed doses achieved were 431.0 Gy and 699.6 Gy respectively, thus confirmed the minimum dose obtained complied with the prescribed minimum generic dose as required to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment.
