Infrared cirrus and Hi in directions near the LMC

Description
Two narrow streams of infrared cirrus (300 and 120 in length), in regions of sky adjacent to the Large Magellanic Cloud, have been investigated. It is shown that the ridge lines of both streams lie on great circles. The neutral hydrogen associated with the streams was recognized by its very narrow line halfwidths and high peak temperatures, which were in contrast to the halfwidths, and temperatures of adjacent 'local' hydrogen. The radial-velocity information obtained establishes that the streams are not in the vicinity of the LMC. In fact, it is obvious from their positions and structure that the streams must be fairly close to the Sun. A brief discussion of the geometric and kinematic conditions in the streams is given.
