Effect of radioprotectors on the altered DNA content in rat tissues following whole body gamma radiation

  • 1. Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, Delhi (India)

Description

DNA content in liver spleen and kidney of rats was estimated prior and at 3, 24 and 168 h after 8 Gy whole-body gamma irradiation. As compared to liver and kidney of the irradiated control group, there was a significant decrease in the weight of spleen at 168 h of post irradiation and in its DNA content at all time intervals. Similar studies carried out in animals pretreated with optimum dose of aminoethylisothiuronium bromide hydrobromide (AET, 200 mg/kg body wt.) and with the combination of AET (20 mg/kg body wt.) with 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP 100 mg/kg body wt.) showed that the altered DNA content in the liver of the irradiated control group was better restored in AET-pretreated group and in case of kidney and spleen by AET + 5-HTP-pretreated group.
