Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy in Japan and Nuclear Research and Development in The Future

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Tokai (Japan)

Description

President Eisenhower's proposal paved the way for peaceful uses of nuclear energy by non-nuclear-weapon-States such as Japan in 1953. In 1955, the Atomic Energy Basic Law was enacted in the Diet, and the Law has provided the foundation for Japanese development of nuclear energy up to now. This Law stipulates that the basic principle of nuclear development in Japan is to use nuclear energy for peaceful use only, to assure safety, to promote international cooperation, to establish democratic management and independent operation, and to disclose the accomplished results. Japan is geographically a small country with a large population and with very limited natural resources. It imports large quantities of energy resources and food from abroad
