KTA Safety Regulation 2201.1 version 6/90. Seismic design of nuclear power stations. Pt. 1

The purpose of the regulations of the Kerntechnischen Ausschusses (KTA) [Committee for Nuclear Technology] is to lay down safety requirements which must be observed in order to provide against during damage the construction and operation of the installation. In order to achieve these aims KTA Regulation 2201.1 deals with the principles for seismic design of nuclear power stations in the context of KTA 2201 ''Seismic design of Nuclear Power Stations''. The other parts of the regulation (not covered in this publication) are Part 2: Foundation soil; Part 3: Design of structural works; Part 4: Requirements of methods for verifying the seismic safety of mechanical and electrical plant components; Part 5: Seismic instrumentation; Part 6: Measures to be taken following earthquakes. This regulation is to be applied to nuclear power stations but can additionally be applied as appropriate to the design of all other nuclear installations. The regulation establishes the dimensioning earthquake, classifies the plant components, looks at loads, the design, calculates dynamic situations and looks at seismic instrumentation and effects on the site including foundation soil.
