Fast wave ion cyclotron and first harmonic heating of large tokamaks

  • 1. Wisconsin Univ., Madison (USA)

Description

Fast magneto-sonic wave heating near the first deuteron cyclotron harmonic in a reactor and minority species heating in a TFTR device are considered. For a reactor it is found that the introduction of a sufficiently large ksub(parall) increases the wave absorption zone and virtually eliminates mode conversion from the fast wave to ion Bernstein waves. The influence of the two-ion hybrid resonance on minority species heating is shown to dominate the absorption process for TFTR plasmas. A sufficiently large ksub(parall) in this case is shown to eliminate the evanescent zone near the two-ion hybrid resonance and allow strong absorption there
