Development of a new Neptunium separation process by using photochemical reduction in nuclear fuel reprocessing
- 1. JAERI Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Ibaraki-ken (Japan). Process Engineering Lab.
Description
A study on the photochemical reduction of extractable Np(VI) to inextractable Np(V) in the system: Np(VI)-U(VI)-30% tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP)/70% n-dodecane(nDD)-3 M HNO3 has been conducted in order to improve the neptunium separation efficiency in nuclear fuel reprocessing. The effectiveness of photochemical separation of neptunium was demonstrated by using a mixer-settler which was connected with a photochemical cell. About 90% of Np(VI) fed to the mixer-settler was reduced to Np(V) and separated from uranium. (orig.)
