Method to process the ammonium nitrate occuring in the manufacture of fuels or breeder materials for nuclear reactors
Description
The ammonium nitrate occuring in the manufacture of nuclear fuels is radioactively contaminated; it is thus necessary to subject it to special processing. According to the invention, the NH4NO3-containing solution is mixed with a basic metal oxide or hydroxide at about 1000C, the ammonia formed is evaporated off and the nitrate solution is dried. The solid metal nitrate is thermally decomposed to metal oxide and nitrogen oxide. The thus obtained compounds can be used again in the manufacture of nuclear fuels. (orig.)

Das bei der Herstellung von Kernbrennstoffen anfallende Ammoniumnitrat ist radioaktiv kontaminiert, es ist daher eine spezielle Aufarbeitung notwendig. Erfindungsgemaess wird die NH4NO3-haltige Loesung bei ca. 1000C und mit einem basischen Metalloxid oder - hy - droxid versetzt, der sich bildende Ammoniak abgedampft und die Nitratloesung eingetrocknet. Das feste Metallnitrat wird thermisch zu Metalloxid und Stickoxid zersetzt. Die so gewonnenen Verbindungen lassen sich bei der Herstellung der Kernbrennstoffe erneut einsetzen. (RB)Additional details
