Description

A method was developed for direct synthesis of fused samples of Y2O3, SiO2 and Al2O3 by radiation-induced melting of briquetted mixture of the oxides. A region was determined corresponding to glass formation in the Y2O3-SiO2-Al2O3 system. Optical measurements made in the range of wave lengths 0.3-6 micrometers for glasses containing (>=)40% by wt. Y2O3 revealed the following spectral characteristics: transmission 75-87%; refractive index nsub(D)=1.69-1.72; reflection factor 5-8%. For glasses having the composition Y2O3x2SiO2xAl2O3 and containing 52% by wt. Y2O3 with a density of 3.71 g/cm3 and microhardness 1000 kg/mm2, the softening temperature ranged from 1100 to 1600 deg C
