Study on the Effect of Gamma Radiation on Local Aromatic Rice (Var. Pyapon Paw Hsan) for Variety Improvement

Mutation techniques are very important tools to study genetic variability, function, action and regulation of genes. In the present research,it was proposed the use of mutation techniques to directly select mutants with desired agronomic characteristic. Dry seeds of local aromatic rice variety Pyapon Paw Hsan were treated with 100 Gy and 200 Gy of gamma radiation using cobalt 60 (60 Co) source for induced mutation. The seeds were sown in the field along with the control for M1 generation. In next generation, plants with positive attributes were observed in both treatments. When compared to nonirradiated control and 200 Gy, the 100 Gy gamma ray treatment gave the shorter plant height, longer panicle length, more effective tillers per plant, more effective filled grains per panicle, less filled grains per panicle and heavier 1000 grains weight. More chlorophyll deficient mutants were discovered in M2 generation. At higher dosage 200 Gy, the frequence of chlorophyll mutation albina was higher compared to the lower dosage, 100 Gy. Photoperiod insensitivity is the selected trait for the present research. Total 34 mutants were selected in M2 generation. The mutant from 100 Gy, P100-106-13 showed the longest panicle length and greatest number of filled grains among the collected mutants. Form 200 Gy, the mutant P200-106-10 also expressed the similar results. for the promised outcome, the selected mutants are being planted in M3.
