Energy transfer in collissions between excited atoms

Description
We report on the collisional processes that occur in alkali metal vapours upon illumination with a laser tuned to the first principal atomic transition, observed in experiments performed under various conditions. Several proposed mechanisms for the population of higher atomic and molecular levels are presented and discussed. (orig.)
