Photoneutron energy spectra from 24Na-Be and 24Na-D

  • 1. Battelle Pacific Northwest Labs., Richland, WA (USA)

Description

The neutron energy spectra from 9Be(γ,n)8Be and D(γ,n)1H photoneutron sources which use 2.754 MeV gamma rays from 24Na have been measured with a 3He ionization chamber. A data analysis procedure was developed for dealing with distortions due to severe gamma pileup. The measured spectra are compared to spectra calculated from neutron transport in Be and D2O. Peak energies for 24Na-Be and 24Na-D were 957 +- 9 and 245 +- 9 keV, respectively, which may be compared with the calculated peak energies of 968 and 265 keV. The average energies for the experimental spectra were 798 +- 71 and 202 +- 15 keV. The average energies from the calculated spectra were 796 and 189 keV for 24Na-Be and 24Na-D, respectively.
