Efficiency of bisphenol-A decomposition by Oxidants and gamma ray

Recently, bisphenol-A (BPA) has been issued in waste water because of potential impacts on ecosystem and public health. This study was aimed at investigating the possibility of BPA degradation using gamma ray irradiation. In addition, the use of oxidants such as sodium persulfate, potassium persulfate, hydrogen peroxide and ferrous sulfate was tested in order to examine a synergistic effect with gamma ray. The absorbed dose was from 0.2 to 10 kGy and the concentrations of oxidants were from 0.1 to 10 mM in this study. The concentration of BPA was gradually decreased with the increasing absorbed dose. The parent compounds were completely degraded even at a low dose of 0.8 kGy when sodium persulfate was simultaneously applied. The removal efficiency of total organic carbon was 26% even at the highest dose of 10 kGy without sodium persulfate. However, the removal efficiency was dramatically enhanced up to 98% at the same dose by adding 10 mM of sodium persulfate. It was suggested that hydroxyl radical (OH ·) and sulfate radical (SO4-·) were formed in the system and played roles in degrading BPA at the same time. In conclusion, sodium persulfate could give a synergistic effect on the degradation and mineralization of BPA when it is used in a radiolysis system of gamma ray
