The study of iron carbon and aluminium magnesium alloys by internal friction at medium frequency
Description
Automatic internal friction measuring devices, their manufacture, and use in studying iron carbon and aluminium magnesium alloys are described. A brief review of the theory of internal friction in metals is given. A comparative study of various mechanical and electronic measuring devices is made. A flexing apparatus and a torsion balance, both permitting automatic measurements, are presented. Dilute carbon iron alloys were studied. The reorientation of the carbon and the precipitation kinetics were studied as a function of the purity-of the iron, the quenching rate and the ageing temperature. The results are interpreted in terms of the theories of Wert and Zener and then those of Damask, Danielson and Dienes. A systematic study was made of internal friction in Al Mg alloys at various frequencies with different magnesium contents, thermal treatments, and deformations. (author)
Abstract (French)
Notre travail se divise en deux grandes sections: l'etude et la realisation d'appareils automatiques de mesure de frottement interne puis l'utilisation de ces moyens d'investigation dans deux cas precis: alliages fer-carbone et aluminium magnesium. La premiere partie de la these est un bref rappel theorique sur le frottement interne dans les metaux. La seconde partie, consacree aux dispositifs experimentaux, est une etude comparee des diverses possibilites tant mecaniques qu'electroniques et une decription de deux de nos principales realisations: un appareil de flexion et un pendule de torsion permettant tous deux des mesures automatiques. La troisieme partie est tout d'abord relative a l'etude des alliages dilues de carbone dans le fer: comparaison des energies de reorientation du carbone et etude des cinetiques de precipitation en fonction de la purete du fer, de la vitesse de trempe, et de la temperature de vieillissement. Les resultats sont interpretes a l'aide de la theorie de Wert et Zener, puis de celle de Damask, Danielson et Dienes. Le dernier chapitre, enfin, est consacre a une etude systematique du frottement interne dans les alliages d'Al Mg a diverses frequences en fonction du pourcentage de magnesium, du traitement thermique et de la deformation.
