Investigation of 2''3''8U and 232TH in rock samples selected from Touria Mountain Omdurman

Description

The area of Touria Mountain (located near Omdurman city) has been used for dumping different type of wastes, especially medical waste. The main objective of this study is to investigate the radioactivity and assess risks due to presence of radionuclide in the area. Investigations of naturally occurring as well as anthropogenic radionuclides are conducted using gamma spectrometry. No man made radionuclides are detected in the area, but natural uranium, thorium and potassium observed with normal levels comparable with the world mean activity concentrations in rock. The obtained results showed that the ranges of the activity concentration of 238U, 232Th and 04K are 44.95-24.14, 43.31-29.45 and 1113.96-31.23 Bq.kg-''1 respectively. Mean concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K are 30.9, 38.7 and 538.0 Bq.kg-1 respectively. According to the UNSCEAR report 2000, the worldwide activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K are reported to be 17-60, 11-64 and 140-850 Bq.kg-1 with the mean concentrations of 238U, and 232Th and 40K are reported to be 17-60, 11-64 and 140-850 Bq.kg-1 with mean concentration of 35,30 and 400 Bq.kg-1 respectively.(Author)
