Mechanism of formation of the daytime trough in winter in the southern hemisphere

Description

Latitudinal profiles of electron concentration, taken by the Kosmos-900 satellite in the southern hemisphere, are compared with model calculations. The conclusion is made that formation of subauroral daytime trough in winter is caused by the absence of an ionization source in the absolute shadow area formed in the daytime sector (∼ 14-18 UT) in the course of diurnal Earth rotation
