Bone density determination using I125 densitometry with idiopathic scoliosis
Description
Based on the assumption that radiographs from patients with idiopathic scoliosis show osteoporotic changes in the curved area, investigation with I125-densitometry were made, and specifically with measurement points at the ulna and the calcaneus. A difference in the bone density between patients with scoliosis and normal controls could not be proven. The mineral-salt content of the scoliosis patients lay on the average 6.5 to 9.3% lower than the normal controls. No relation could be found between the degree of curvature of the scoliosis and the peripheral bone density, from which it can be concluded that no generalized mineral-salt deficiency exists. Radiographs show only local changes (photo densitometry, computed tomography). (TRV)
Abstract (German)
Ausgehend von der Feststellung, dass Roentgenbilder von Patienten mit idiopathischer Skoliose im Kruemmungsbereich osteoporototische Veraenderungen zeigen, wurden Untersuchungen mit der J-125-Densitometrie durchgefuehrt, und zwar mit Messpunkten an der Ulna und am Calcaneus. Ein Unterschied in der Knochendichte zwischen Patienten mit Skoliose und dem Normalkollektiv konnte nicht nachgewiesen werden. Der Mineralsalzgehalt der Skoliosepatienten lag im Mittel 6.5 bis 9.3% niedriger als im Normalkollektiv. Es konnten keine Beziehungen zwischen den Kruemmungswerten der Skoliose und der peripheren Knochendichte gefunden werden, woraus geschlossen wird, dass keine generalisierte Mineralsalzverminderung vorliegt. Roentgenbilder zeigen nur lokale Veraenderungen (Photodensitometrie, Computertomographie). (TRV)
