Description

Considerable sentiment is expressed in support of reactors that are smaller than the 1000-1300 MW(e). Many believe that a carefully designed smaller reactor would be easier to construct, safer to operate, and more amenable to true standardization, thereby improving the licensing process. Small reactors may also be constructed in sequence and thus give the utility more flexibility in planning capacity additions. Further, the consequence of an outage would impact the total grid less. Small reactors minimize the financial exposure of the utility and increase overall system reliability.
