German radwaste acceptance requirements and conditioning

Description
The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has carried out safety assessments for the planned Konrad repository in accordance with safety criteria. Waste acceptance requirements for waste packages with negligible heat generation have been drafted which incorporate the results of the safety assessment. The draft will be finalized during the licensing procedure. The waste acceptance requirements specify the waste form and the packaging to be used for disposal in a mine. The specified parameters can be met and the requirements permit safe flexibility in waste conditioning. Using random tests or the qualification and susequent inspections of the conditioning process, waste package quality control ensures that the waste acceptance requirements are met. The disposal of spent fuel in the planned repository in Gorleben salt dome will follow the same procedure. Additionally, heat generating wastes and several other packagings and waste packages will be considered. 3 tabs
