Can the INTEGRAL-spectrometer SPI detect γ-ray lines from local galaxies?

Description
The spectrometer SPI on board of INTEGRAL, the future γ-ray mission of ESA, is designed to measure γ-ray lines with a high energy resolution and a high sensitivity. It will detect γ-ray lines of long-living isotopes such as 26Al from extragalactic γ-ray sources. In the case of a positive detection important constraints could be set on the yields of those isotopes in supernovae and on supernova rates in the observed galaxies. An estimation of the expected observation times for the 1809 keV γ-ray line of 26Al for different galaxies, mainly galaxies of the local group, is presented. The most promising candidate for such a detection of the 1809 keV γ-ray line is the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)
